Therapy

What is educational therapy?

Educational therapy is an educational intervention that investigates, defines and addresses an individual’s pattern of learning strengths and deficiencies.

What are some therapy goals?

Therapy goals include restoring self-esteem, improving the learning process, developing learning strategies, and helping the child feel comfortable in his or her learning environment.

How is educational therapy different from tutoring?

Tutoring focuses on re-teaching academic subjects. Educational therapy addresses underlying learning skills such as visual and auditory processing, attention and focus, and memory skills. Academic skills such as reading and writing are remediated after weak processing skills are identified and addressed.

When does a child need educational therapy?

All children want to be successful in school. When a child continues to struggle despite parent-teacher interventions or private academic tutoring, he or she should be evaluated for underlying learning deficits. Children do not outgrow learning problems; learning problems often develop into social and emotional problems.

How do therapy services work?

After an initial consultation, a cognitive and academic evaluation is scheduled. Learning strengths and deficiencies are defined and a therapy plan is developed. Skills are trained in hourly sessions at the therapist’s office.

How frequently will my child need to attend?

Intense and consistent training will result in maximum gains in a short period of time. PACE™, a highly effective cognitive program, requires 3 therapist sessions and 3 home practice sessions per week over a twelve-week period. Other programs are less intense, but may take more time to be effective. A minimum of two sessions per week is recommended.
