Consultation
What is the purpose of an educational consultation?
The purpose of the consultation is to help parents become
active participants in their child’s educational process. A consultation
is important if your child has had an assessment that you do not understand or
if you are not sure how to proceed.
What is included in the educational consultation?
All previous tests and records are reviewed. Test findings
are explained and scores are plotted on a chart for clarity. Educational options
are discussed, and questions regarding special education laws and 504 accommodations
are answered. When parents can identify their child’s needs and understand
their options, a plan of action can be developed.
Why do I need to be an active participate in my child’s education?
Children who struggle in school need all the adults
in their life to work in a collaborative manner to assure growth and comfort in
the classroom. Whether your child qualified for special services or not, your
input and monitoring is critical to your child’s success.
What if I’m confused or disagree with the IEP (Individual Education Plan) assessment?
No matter how well intentioned, many factors influence
the outcome of an education evaluation. The consultation can bring a fresh viewpoint
and clarify questions you may have about a previous evaluation. A second opinion
can also bring into focus questions or issues that need to be examined.
What should I do if my child does not qualify for services?
If your child does not qualify for services but struggles in school, you need to develop a plan to break the cycle of failure. By understanding what your child needs, pursuing a collaborative model, and seeking outside help that targets success, you can make a difference in your child’s academic, social, and emotional health. Remember, learning problems do not go way without some type of intervention.
What about additional testing?
Cognitive and academic screenings are available to supplement and clarify previous testing.
