Evaluation/Assessment
What is the focus of an educational assessment given by an educational therapist?
The focus of the educational assessment is to gain insight into the child’s pattern of learning strengths and deficiencies. Once a child’s learning process is understood, a therapy plan that targets success can be developed.
What is included in the educational assessment?
The assessment includes the testing and evaluation, a written report and consultation with the parents, and a consultation with the child.
How is this assessment different
than an IEP evaluation?
The focus of the IEP assessment is to determine if
the child qualifies for special services through the school district. The evaluation
given by an eduational specialist focuses on understanding how the child learns
in order to help him become a more comfortable and efficient learner.
What kind of testing do you administer?
The testing is designed to investigate and define how a child processes information and how those cognitive skills impact academic learning. The tests measure visual and auditory memory, phonemic awareness, word attack skills, comprehension, spelling, mathematics, processing speed, logic and reasoning, and attention focus. In addition, an extensive questionnaire is given to the child, parents, and teachers.
Will the test determine if my child has a learning disability?
No, the testing is not designed to determine if a child
has a learning disability. Referrals are made if the child may qualify for special
services through the school, or if further investigative testing from a specialist
is indicated.
Why would you need to consult with the child?
Understanding their strengths and weaknesses helps children with self-acceptance, and is the first step in taking responsibility for their learning. Taking responsibility means to be willing to work on weak skills, learning to compensate, and asking for help when needed.
