PACE™ - Processing and Cognitive Enhancement
What is PACE?
PACE is an individualized therapy approach that combines the principles of cognitive psychology, education, and auditory and vision processing into a program designed to benefit children with learning difficulties.
How does PACE work?
Like many physical skills such as walking, people learn and develop most learning skills. Since these skills are learned and developed, they can be improved through training. In PACE, the therapist prescribes demanding, sequential cognitive tasks to be practiced under controlled conditions. As the tasks are practiced, individual skills become more efficient and learning performance is improved.
What learning skills are trained during the PACE program?
PACE develops and trains auditory and visual memory, phonemic awareness, visual processing, sequential and spatial processing, sustained attention and skill integration.
What are some general signs of problems that may require PACE?
The following signs may indicate problems that can be improved by training: slow work, poor comprehension, poor spelling and reading skills, inefficient memory, weak attention span, sloppy writing, careless errors, and the use of excessive energy.
How long does PACE take?
PACE requires 3 therapist sessions and 3 home practice sessions per week over a twelve-week period.
Why is PACE such an intensive program?
Most skills needed for efficient learning are subconscious. For example, when reading, you don’t think of the required eye movements or the blending of sounds. These skills are subconscious. Instead, you concentrate on the meaning of what is being read. In other words, you concentrate on what you’re reading, not how you’re reading. With the very intense PACE program, these learning skills are developed and trained to the subconscious level.
How do children react to the program?
Children are very receptive to the program because they see change and realize success very quickly. PACE activities are fast paced, varied, and challenging. Because children are successful very quickly, enthusiasm and self-motivation become self-sustaining.
